The Alliance for Ethical International Recruitment Practices has taken a decisive step toward ensuring foreign nurses are treated fairly and ethically with a new comprehensive code that establishes best practices to combat inequities. While the Alliance is immigration neutral, the Health Care Code for Ethical International Recruitment and Employment Practices seeks to maximize the benefits and mitigate the harm for health professionals—foreign-educated and domestic, as well as for recruiters, and employers.
Nurses migrating to the US face many challenges that can limit their chance of success, from having their credibility questioned, to being unable to change jobs. This is exacerbating the country’s nursing shortage and causing concern about meeting the health needs of an ageing population.
The Alliance seeks adoption of its global, ethical standards by certifying placement firms as “Certified Ethical Firms,” which helps nurses feel secure in the workplace, while also empowering healthcare professionals to make better career decisions.
“The new Code was developed by a diverse group of stakeholders, all with independent interests, including recruiters and representatives from the American Nurses Association, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, and the American Organization of Nursing Executives,” said Franklin A. Shaffer, EdD, RN, FAAN, FFNMRCSI, President and CEO of CGFNS. “It is an excellent document that protects all nurses and helps foreign nurses to feel comfortable working in the US.”
The Alliance’s Code complements the WHO Code of Global Practice, which requires member states improve the ethical treatment of nurses in the workplace and replaces the original document which was created in 2008.
The launch of the new Code coincides with CGFNS International, Inc.’s 9th International Distinguished Leadership Symposium, at the Warwick Hotel Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia, September 18, 2017. The event is preceded by CGFNS’ 40th Anniversary reception, the night of the 17th, celebrating four decades of service to the global healthcare community. The Alliance for Ethical International Recruitment Practices is a division of CGFNS.
About the Alliance
Since 2009, the Alliance has fostered compliance to standards that advocate responsible, ethical, and transparent recruitment practices in the health care sector. The Alliance monitors certified recruitment organizations and verifies their processes to ensure that these standards are upheld. They also provide foreign-educated professionals resources to make informed decisions. The Alliance launched a companion code for K-12 teachers in 2015. The Alliance became a division of CGFNS International, Inc., in September 2014.
